Nobody knows your child better than you do. When something about your child’s behavior or development seems “off,” you need to talk to a healthcare practitioner who will truly listen to your concerns.
At NeuroHealth in Indianapolis, we diagnose and treat a variety of neurobehavioral disorders that commonly affect children, as well as adults. Our goal is to improve overall neurological function by treating any underlying conditions that could be contributing to symptoms.
Understanding Neurobehavioral Disorders Neurobehavioral disorders are a diverse range of conditions – about as diverse as the individuals living with them. People with neurobehavioral disorders experience differences and difficulties in the way they think, behave, and perceive and interact with the world, due to a disease, illness, or injury affecting the brain and central nervous system.
People with neurobehavioral disorders have a hard time communicating and socializing with others, regulating their emotions, and learning. Their physical function (e.g., coordination, balance, strength, sensation) may also be affected.
Some of the most common neurobehavioral disorders we see in our child and adolescent patients include:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Non-traumatic brain injury (e.g., damage caused by near-drowning)
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
Medical conditions that can cause neurobehavioral disorders in people of all ages include:
Stroke
Brain tumors
Toxin exposure (e.g., lead poisoning, fetal alcohol syndrome, Wernicke encephalopathy)
Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia are considered neurobehavioral disorders, too.
How Functional Neurology Can Help The brain and nervous system are connected to the gut, immune system, endocrine (hormone) system, and circulatory system. A dysfunction anywhere in the body can contribute to neurobehavioral disorders. For example, a hormone imbalance or nutritional deficiency may worsen cognitive function. Functional neurologists identify these underlying issues.
Our goal is not just to minimize symptoms. We believe in a “whole-person” approach – with non-invasive diagnostic procedures, we can determine the best approach to improving our patients’ overall health. Treatment plans may include dietary changes or supplements, laser therapy, and electrical stimulation of nerves, as well as other non-invasive procedures.
