Non-invasive Treatment for Knee Pain

Knee pain can be a minor annoyance, or it can be severe enough to interfere with your quality of life. Invasive knee pain treatment like surgery and steroid injections may not provide any relief from pain – and sometimes, those procedures make the pain worse. People with knee pain may not realize they have other options for treatment that don’t involve drugs, surgery, or a long recovery.

At NeuroHealth Services, we believe in treating the whole person – not just your knee – so we can alleviate the problems that are causing your pain. You may already have a knee pain diagnosis, but rarely is a disease or medical condition the sole cause of knee pain.

What Causes Knee Pain
The body is a complex machine, and to operate at peak efficiency, your endocrine system, immune system, and nervous system must work well together. Any breakdown in “communication” – either within these systems, or between them – can cause inflammation and pain.

Our Approach to Non-Surgical Knee Pain Relief
We use a combination of functional neurology and functional medicine to create an individualized treatment plan for every patient. Depending on the symptoms and nature of your knee pain, we may employ a variety of non-invasive tests to evaluate your overall health, such as:

  • Blood chemistry analysis – Blood tests help us identify any nutritional factors or undiagnosed health conditions that may be contributing to your knee pain.
  • Neuroendocrine immune assessment – This is an evaluation of your glandular and nervous systems, sleep/wake cycles, and how your body reacts to stress hormones (neuroendocrine immune dysfunction causes a wide variety of symptoms, including pain, fatigue, and interference with the body’s ability to heal).
  • Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CAPS) – This analytical tool allows us to see any postural abnormalities that could be contributing to your knee pain.
Conditions We Treat

Many patients come to us because previous healthcare providers were unsuccessful at relieving their chronic or recurrent knee pain. Our patients have included people with:
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative (bone-on-bone) arthritis
  • Cartilage damage
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Generalized knee pain
  • Plica syndrome
  • Knee pain from a previous injury

Call our office, if you have questions about the types of knee pain we treat.

How We Relieve Knee Pain

People with knee pain often “compensate” by changing their gait when walking. While that may temporarily alleviate pain, improper posture can lead to other problems, and not just in your knee. Favoring one leg can cause hip pain, a loss of flexibility, strength, and mobility – even lower back pain. As these secondary problems develop, knee pain may become worse. We can break that cycle.

We may recommend a combination of these proven methods of non-surgical knee pain relief:

Mechanical decompression:
Decompression is gentle manipulation that relieves pain and helps restore your knee’s alignment. We may use decompression techniques on other areas, such as the spine or hips, as part of our overall knee pain relief strategy.

Class IV laser therapy:
We use Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to stimulate the knee’s soft tissues (meniscus, ligaments, cartilage, and the plica – a thin membrane that is present in about 50 percent of the population). The laser has anti-inflammatory effects and increases blood circulation and stimulates cellular energy.

Bioelectrical pain-blocking and tissue-healing:
Sometimes, a breakdown in cellular communication causes pain and inflammation. Our Hako-Med Horizontal Therapy system sends signals to cells to stimulate communication, based on how we adjust frequencies and amplitudes.

When we develop your treatment plan, we’ll explain what would be most beneficial for you, and what outcomes you can expect.
